Background: Multinational tobacco companies recruited consultants secretly world wide in 1980¡¯s after health effects of second hand smoking was revealed. Involvement of Korean academics as tobacco industry consultants had not been studied well.
Methods: We searched Legacy Tobacco Documents Library with the key words of ¡¯ETS and Korea and consultants¡¯ and further searched the name of individual academics.
Results: We found three Korean academics who worked as consultants of tobacco company (Yun-Shin Kim, Jung-Koo Roh, and Sung-Ok Paik). We also found two Korean academics who performed tobacco company-sponsored researches (Chul-Whan Cha and Eung-Bae Shin). We documented activities of these academics with research projects and conferences hey held with the financial support of tobacco companies. We also documented the technical consultant to them and level of fees the received form the tobacco companies.
Conclusion: Tobacco companies used the study results made by the consultants supported by them as if it is ¡¯third party technique¡¯. It is needed to discuss conflict of interests issue related to health and industry among Korean academics.
